Illinois State University, the first public university in the state, is a coeducational, residential university with six colleges and 34 academic departments that offer more than 160 fields of study. Illinois State University is centrally located in the twin-city community of Bloomington-Normal, 137 miles southwest of Chicago and 164 miles northeast of St. Louis with a population of approximately 110,200. Easily accessible by interstates 39, 55, 74 and US highway 51, the Bloomington-Normal community also benefits from Amtrak rail service and the Central Illinois Regional Airport provides daily jet service on AirTran Airways, American Connection, American Eagle, Northwest Airlink and United Express.
