Data in the program review report are reported by degree level (Illinois State's degree levels are bachelor's, master's, certificate of advanced study and doctoral.)
This is the organizational taxonomy for collecting and reporting university data used in all National Center for Educational Statistics surveys. Degree programs are assigned six digit CIPS, based on the degree discipline. For example CIP 31.0301 categorizes all data for Parks and Recreation Facilities Management.
All Illinois State degree programs are assigned to a CIP category by the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE). In FY2003, there were many CIP changes. Where possible, information has been represented under the new CIP. However, for some programs, the historical information for the program has been split between the two CIPS.
These are the enrollments reported in the IPEDS Fall enrollment survey for this CIP category. Program enrollment is nominally as of October 15 of each year and includes both on- and off-campus enrollment.
Degrees are reported in the IPEDS Degree survey by fiscal year and CIP category. For example, the FY2001 column represents total degrees conferred in summer 2000, fall 2000 and spring 2001 in this CIP.
These are annual costs from appropriated funding associated with: direct instruction, indirect instruction, departmental research, and departmental overhead divided by annual credit hours in this CIP. Source data for these costs are from the university's Faculty Activity Assignment Form. Costs include all university overheads, except for operation and maintenance (Line 212 in the IBHE Discipline Cost Study). The IBHE has not yet released the discipline cost study for FY2005.
Note that discipline costs are based on four digit CIP categories and consequently can encompass several degree programs, which are based on six digit CIP categories.
For example, Business Teacher Education, Health Education, Music Education and Physical Education are all in the same four digit CIP category. Dollars per credit hour are calculated for the fiscal year. For example, the FY2001 column represents average dollars per credit hour for summer 2000, fall 2000, and spring 2001.
These are the annual number of credits taught per faculty staff year (with one staff year equivalent to a FT 12 month position) for faculty instructing in this discipline. Instructional fiscal years encompass summer, fall, and spring credit hours. These data are from the IBHE Faculty Credit Hour Study and are also based on four digit CIP categories. The IBHE has not yet released the faculty credit hour study for FY2005.
Besides including the time spent in direct instruction in that CIP, the staff years also include a portion of indirect instruction, departmental research, and departmental overhead at the departmental level, based on the ratio of credit hours taught in different CIP categories by the department.
